I think I'll try to keep it dynamic, then build a graphics library with a default value (96), adjustable in custom builds.
Quite a bit of work remaining!

Obviously a game can already work with fixed patterns or whatever trick bashing on the existing concept, I think the core won't be affected by my future changes

How would work a mixed hires/lores screen ? I found a site with a game where I think the developer work a pseudo hires screen except for the bottom 2 lines, that are kept in normal resolution:

I'm trying to remap to a mid rez. map, 16 bytes are for a nibble (4 bits) to reach a 128 pixel rez.

I found it?s very hard to find a suitable pattern set by hand for a practical use like a game so I developed a tool based on Google Sheets and some scripting.

It allows to visually compare (and edit) how a 256x192 graphic display translates to 11 different sets of ROM font patterns of 32x192 pseudo hires and then generates the C char array declaration.

The driver variant I'm working on for z88dk will have a dynamic allocation of the display memory.
Due to the different way to set up the display pointer the frame sync will differ by 1 T-state.
I had to manually tune this prototype, so we can't say this is better or worse until we try on real machines.
Debugging is in progress. . damn it is a very delicate piece of code!

Sadly also my rampack needs a fix, after I tried the WRX mod

A reasonable number of TV sets should be checked, I'll probably post something on zx81.de as soon as I get a resonably clean test program. ..This means I first need to complete a minimal implementation, first.

Very nice and fast! I have a half working putsprite() function, with still a couple of nasty bugs I still couldn't fix.
Also the plotting functions are unstable, but as you surely discovered, the pseudo-hrg is a delicate and complex environment

After having avoided all the traps z88dk will make it accessible to everybody

Solved ! the LNCTR video adjust setting on the Display section has to be checked.

I just committed an update permitting to allocate automatically the d-file.
In case you wish to use it you should first change a constant in gfx/graphics.inc (192 rows to be set), clean , and rebuild gfx81.lib.
the created gfx81phrg.lib can be renamed and kept in /z88dk/lib/clibs.
Issuing a clg() will enter in pseudo hrg mode, allocate and initialize the display.
You may then add a reference to the base_graphics object and bind it to a char* variable.

I was busy with the last touches to my game, RetroSnake has been finally released, including the source code: https://www.sinclairzxworld.com/viewtop ... f=4&t=3653

Good news is it has already been played OK on the real ZX81 ! the executable is at 16.190 bytes, I had to squeeze every possible byte.

I'll download the latest build and recompile my code to check if everything is fine, I remember I had to manually update PUBLIC L0229 in zx81_altint_core.asm

The other thing that I want to experiment with are the other resolutions you wrote about on the thread, I don't know if you have some example code to get me started ?

Really thankful for all your help with this project, I'm already thinking on the next one with z88dk...
